Hello parents and caregivers,
This week the students are finishing up our first math unit. The students focused on different ways to solve addition, and subtraction facts within the numbers 1-20. We have been working with number lines, number strings, number racks, and addition tables that the students created. We are also focusing on solving story problems. We are also continuing our unit on community helpers. The students will have many opportunities to research helpers in our community, and listen to guest speakers. Thank you to all of the parents that have volunteered to help us with this unit! We are also going to be brainstorming ideas to become better community helpers, ourselves. We will be starting a service learning project soon, to benefit our downtown community. Project Lead the Way is off to a great start! The students have begun to use the Scratch Junior app. to better understand coding. If your child has a tendency to have "accidents" at school, please make sure he/she has a change of clothes and underwear in their backpack. For those children that have an occasional accident, we do have underwear and clothing at school. But, our clothing pool is dwindling. If your child has borrowed some clothing because of an accident, please wash and return the clothes to school so we can have it for another child or another day. Also, feel free to donate any uniform clothing to our collection. Please feel free to keep the underwear, those do not need to brought back. -Mrs. Melman Hello parents and caregivers,
I hope you all are enjoying your long weekend! Remember, there will be no school on Friday, September 2nd, or Monday, September 5th. Thank you all for making our conference day so enjoyable! I loved hearing more about the kids and cannot wait to see all of their smiling faces on Tuesday. Tuesday we will be presenting our projects and wrapping up our space unit. Next, we will be focusing on community helpers. Please let me know if you, yourself, are a community helper and would like to speak with the class. We will also be going on our first walking field trip to the library on Tuesday! Make sure your child is wearing appropriate shoes. Have a great weekend! -Mrs. Melman This week we will be focusing on the sun, and the planets in our solar system. Next week we will be concluding our space unit with a project called, The Rover Landing Project. Students will create an airbag system that can safely land an egg dropped on to the floor from the second story of our building, much like NASA uses to land its robotic spacecraft on Mars. I will also be sending home a project over the long weekend for students to do more research on a planet of their choosing.
In reading this week we will be reviewing how to retell a story. Students will be working to identify the beginning, middle, and ending of a story, as well as the problem and solution. These are great talking points for at home reading. Next week is parent teacher conference week. Please sign up online for a time slot for your child. If you are not receiving class emails, please contact me. Hello parents and caregivers,
This week our class will begin learning about the universe, and our solar system. We will be looking at books, and videos to discover more about the universe, and its wonders. We will also be sharing our learning through writing, and classroom projects. We will also be focusing on writing this week. The students will be learning about different ways to begin their writing such as brainstorming, webbing, and using graphic organizers to gather their thoughts. Please make sure you are checking the snack calendar for your child’s day to bring snack! There is a copy of the calendar on the class website under resources. Hello parents and caregivers,
This week our class will be focusing on building our classroom climate. We will be doing this through playing “getting to know you” games, sharing our Me Bags, learning the school creed, and rules, creating rules for our classroom, and many more fun activities. I am excited to be getting to know all of the wonderful students in my classroom. I also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about our classroom website. On our website you can find the snack calendar, photos from the classroom, and my classroom blog to keep you up to date on what is happening at the school, and in our class. -Mrs. Melman This week the students learned about firefighting. They had the opportunity to try on gear, and learned about the training that firefighters need to be successful. We also began learning about multiplication and arrays! We will continue to practice this new skill, as well as reviewing time, money, fractions, addition, and subtraction.
Our class has recently gained a new student! If you are planning on sending anything for the class in the final weeks of school we now have 20 students. To wrap up our school year our students will be learning about community helpers, and U.S. government. I am currently looking for any parent volunteers to come and share with our class, who have jobs that help serve our community! If you would like to volunteer please email me, or send me a dojo message with your career, and days you would be able to come to our classroom.
Snack for May We currently have plenty of snack in the classroom that we need to eat before the end of the school year! I will not be sending home the snack bag until we are completely out! Effective Monday, May 9, 2016, students will no longer be able to charge meals to their cafeteria accounts if they are lacking sufficient funds. For the remainder of the school year, students MUST have sufficient funds in their meal accounts to buy a school breakfast and/or lunch in the cafeteria. Please check your student's account balance and deposit funds as necessary. Math-
