Hello parents, and caregivers,
This week we are finishing up our autobiographies. The students have been writing about their memories from different years in there life, and are working to sequence them in chronological order. In math the students are learning to create, and sort different types of triangles and quadrilaterals. They are also learning how to find the area of an object. We are also learning about plants, life-cycles and growth this week. We went on a field trip to the Myriad Gardens today to observe growth and life in the gardens. In the classroom we are reading books and watching videos to learn more about plants. We have begun to work on our play. Not all students have an on stage ‘job’. Many students will be working on the set, props, make up and costuming. Clusters will continue this Friday. Don’t forget to ask your student what is happening in their cluster! -Mrs. Melman

Hello parents, and caregivers,
Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful break, and lots of quality time with your kiddos! This week we are reviewing some phonics word families. We are also beginning to write autobiographies. In math the students are learning all about sequences using pattern blocks, unifix cubes, and tiles. We are also beginning a new math unit about geometry. Clusters will begin this Friday! Students will receive their cluster placement Friday afternoon. We will be taking our next library trip Tuesday, March 28. We will also be taking a walking field trip to the Myriad Garden soon to look for signs of spring. Be on the look out for a sign up! The students will begin working on a second grade play next week. The play is called How Does Your Garden Grow? -Mrs. Melman Hello parents, and caregivers,
Tonight is our spring open house event! The students are excited to show you some different projects and activities we have been working on in the classroom. We hope to see you there! Our focus in math this week has been triple digit addition, skip counting by 10’s and 100’s, writing numbers in expanded form, and using money. The students will be taking their post-assessment and will begin a new unit after the break. We have began a unit on animals, and habitats. The students are learning to classify animals by their characteristics, and are creating animal books. We also tested our popsicles in the coolers this week. All of the popsicles stayed somewhat frozen! Our phonics focus has been on adjectives this week. The students are learning to use adjectives to describe objects, and are working to use them in their writing, and in their reading groups. Remember, there is no school March 13-17. Have a great Spring Break! -Mrs. Melman Hello parents, and caregivers,
Next week is our last library trip before Spring Break, please be sure to send your child’s books back so that they have fresh reading material for the break! Our class has had many students sick over the last few weeks. Be sure to talk with your student about hand washing! We are doing our best to clean and disinfect the classroom everyday. If your child has a fever, or has been vomiting, keep them home for 24 hours. We have finished our Project Lead the Way coolers and are waiting to complete the final test when all students are at school. We are learning about money, and strategies for counting money this week. It is helpful to have students help count change in real life situations to practice this skill. Our word family this week is -ay, oa, and ai words. We are also learning about homographs, or words that are spelled the same, but have two different meanings (ex. bat). We are finishing up our realistic fiction books using the writing process. We will begin making autobiographies soon. Next week Thursday we are having an open house at 5:30. There will be some recent projects on display as well as some STEM activities the students have been working on in class. -Mrs. Melman |
